NBA Player Dwight Howard Surprises Elementary Students in 2010!
Orlando Magic center Dwight Howard surprised students at Lake Como Elementary School recently, unveiling hyimself as the man behind the funding for the school’s Blessings in a Backpack program.
Howard paid for all the food for the program using half of the grant he received from Magic owner Rich DeVos after winning DeVos’ Community Enrichment Award at the end of last season. The grant is earmarked to be given to a charity of the players’ choice.
“I love coming back and I love giving,” said Howard, who also stayed to help stuff backpacks Thursday. “The kids make everything so much better. When I see my son I’m just filled with joy and it’s the same way when I see these kids. To put a smile on their face – it means a lot.”
“With the economic crisis going on right now, it’s really tough for the kids to get a good meal everyday,” Howard said. “It’s good just to see them smile, because I know the everyday life can be hard for some of the kids. Brightening up their day for that 10 minutes or whatever I get to be around them – it means a lot.”
