Thank you for your interest in planning a food drive to support Blessings in a Backpack! Your participation supports our mission to provide hunger-free weekends for 90,000 children facing food insecurity and raises awareness about this silent epidemic.
» Contact a Volunteer Services team member with the date of your food drive and we will connect you with a local program able to receive your donations.
»Select a committee to organize the food drive and delegate responsibilities such as publicity and promotion, e-mail updates, food collection, and food delivery.
»Determine how many collection boxes or plastic/paper bags you will need. Grocery stores are usually willing to donate bags or sell them at cost.
»Create posters and flyers to generate awareness and evoke a desire to help.
»Create a theme a fun theme to generate excitement. For example, “Fill the Bag”, Share What You CAN”, “Let’s Bag Hunger.”
»Food drives can last a day, a week or even months. The key is to give participants plenty of notice so they are prepared to bring in their donations.
»Set beginning and end dates for the drive.
»Determine collection sites and who will deliver items to the designated Blessings in a Backpack program at the end of the drive.
»Set a goal for how many bags of food to collect. The Volunteer Services staff will be able to provide the number of participating children in the local Blessings in a Backpack program.
