PGA TOUR Golfer Justin Rose and his Wife Kate Back Blessings in a Big Way!
Justin Rose has eleven professional wins, including four on the European Tour and four PGA TOUR wins, 2010-AT&T and Memorial; 2011-BMW Champs; 2012-WGC Cadillac. A South African-born golfer, Rose now resides in Florida with his wife, Kate and 2 young children.
Justin has increased his charitable support by
lending his name, time and fundraising activities to Blessings in a Backpack. Along with wife Kate, Justin has become
actively involved in Blessings in a Backpack to ensure that underprivileged
school children across America are receiving proper nourishment on the
weekends.
Justin states, “This program is very close to our hearts because Kate
and I know Blessings in a Backpack fills a crucial void for children who
might otherwise go hungry. I can't expect to play good golf if I'm not properly
nourished so how can we expect kids to go a full weekend without enough to eat
and then be able to focus on learning the next school week?”
Justin and Kate have worked closely with Blessings since 2009 where
their fundraising efforts have helped feed over 1,600 school children in 5 Orlando area schools. They have both visited
schools, stuffed backpacks and distributed them to the children, and held two
golf days that raised a total of $380,000! The
Roses have also personally provided exciting trips away from school for the Blessings in a Backpack students – including taking 80 children to the beach in 2011 for the afternoon in Orlando, taking 15 children to the Arnold Palmer Invitational golf event at Bay
Hill in 2011 and 20 children in 2012. The Roses have another beach trip planned in 2012 that will include 60 2nd grade students. These experiences are events these children may never have been exposed to if the
Roses hadn’t thought it was so important to help them see the world beyond
their neighborhood.
It’s through Justin
& Kate’s passion for the program that lead Zurich Financial (feeding 800
children in New Orleans) and Farmers Insurance (feeding 500 children in San
Diego) to extend their support to Blessings in a Backpack. Justin donated $80 for every birdie, 360, he posted in 2011, and Zurich Financial matched his donation. To date Justin has posted 162 birdies,
which already gives a total of $25,920 when matched by Zurich.

The Roses understand the value of good nutrition in the performance equation. "I can't expect to turn up and play good golf if I'm undernourished and haven't put the right fuel in my body to do a good job and perform," says Justin. "So how can you expect a kid to go away on the weekend, not have access to enough food, and be expected to be ready to learn on Monday? From that perspective, it is the foundation of learning and performing, really."
"This event gave us funding to help sustain our program for nearly three years," states Lino Rodriguez, the principal of Grand Avenue Elementary. "Bottom line, our students are hungry. They tell us they're hungry, they write it to us, and they appreciate anything we can do for them, from providing healthy snacks during the school day to providing some food for the weekend to sustain them."
