Blessings in a Backpack and Author Liz Murray Team Up to Feed 50,000 Children in the U.S.

Multi-City Bus Tour Hit the Road in September 2010
When Liz Murray's mother died of AIDS, she decided to take control of her own destiny and go back to high school, often completing her assignments in the hallways and subway stations where she slept. Liz squeezed four years of high school into two, while homeless; won a New York Times scholarship; and made it into the Ivy League.
Her journey was made into a Lifetime movie: From Homeless to Harvard. Now, she has written a book about the journey, Breaking Night is an unforgettable and beautifully written story of one young woman’ s indomitable spirit to survive and prevail, against all odds.
As a child, Liz crammed school cafeteria food in her backpack to stave off starvation. Now 29, she works with Blessings to supply today’s children with food for the weekend when schools are closed.
Liz says, “If I’d had access to a program like Blessings in a Backpack when I was a child, I may not have gone to bed hungry all those nights. Thankfully, with this organization’s continued commitment, thousands of children across America won’t have to.”
Sept. 15, 2010, "Breaking Night" reaches New York Times bestseller list after one week on sale.
