Whitsitt Elementary treated to backpack donation, carnival

Story by Vicki Yates, newschannel5.com

Thanks to Vera Bradley and the nonprofit Blessings in a Backpack, students at Whitsitt Elementary were treated to something special.

More than 13 million children in the U.S. are at risk of going hungry.

That’s why Blessings in a Backpack got involved. Most of the children, some from low income families, struggle with access to food on the weekends. And with the bags packed with snacks and food, they were treated not only to food, and a sturdy backpack to use at school.

They also participated in a carnival on the school campus The school’s principal, Justin Uppinghouse, said he hopes the students know that school is more than just lessons and homework. He wants them to know, that school is a place where they can get support both in and out of the classroom.
