Erin Kerr Named One of Crain’s 2025 Notable Leaders in Philanthropy

Blessings in a Backpack is proud to announce that CEO Erin Kerr has been recognized by Crain’s Chicago Business as one of its 2025 Notable Leaders in Philanthropy. This prestigious honor highlights individuals making significant, lasting contributions to the nonprofit sector and the communities they serve.

“It’s an incredible honor to be recognized by Crain’s as one of the 2025 Notable Leaders in Philanthropy,” said Erin. “This recognition shines a light on the urgent issue of weekend childhood hunger in our country. With more than 13.8 million children facing food insecurity, our work at Blessings in a Backpack is crucial. I’m proud to lead a dedicated team committed to ensuring more kids have the nourishment they need to learn and grow in Chicago and around the country.”

Erin’s deep experience in nonprofit leadership coupled with a personal passion for addressing childhood hunger have been instrumental in the growth of Blessings in a Backpack. Since joining the organization in 2012 as Director of Development and then Chief Development Officer in 2014, she has helped transform Blessings from a $5 million grassroots effort into a $15 million national non-profit operating seven chapters and coordinating volunteer led programs in 46 states.

Erin has led the organization’s national fundraising strategy and expanded partnerships to support hunger-free weekends for children across the country. In her current role as CEO, she continues to guide Blessings’ strategic direction and national reach with a strong focus on program sustainability, equity, and innovation.

Prior to joining Blessings in a Backpack, Erin served in leadership roles at organizations including the Girl Scouts of Chicago and Christopher House. Her commitment to the sector extends beyond her professional work—she actively contributes to her local community.

Erin holds a Bachelor of Business Administration in Finance from the University of Notre Dame, a certificate in nonprofit management from Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management, and she is an alumna of the Allstate Foundation’s Greater Good Nonprofit Leaders Program. In 2023, she received the ‘William D. Reynolds Award’ from Notre Dame, an honor bestowed upon alumni who demonstrate exceptional work with youth and improving their quality of life.

This recognition by Crain’s is a testament to Erin’s leadership, vision, and tireless advocacy for children experiencing food insecurity. Blessings in a Backpack celebrates her achievements and the passion she brings to its mission every day.
