Legacy Giving

Age: 18 and up
Time Commitment: One Time

You can make a lasting impact after passing by allocating a portion of your assets to Blessings in a Backpack. Planned or estate gifts allow supporters to leave a legacy without affecting their current financial security and freedom.

A simple approach is to include Blessings in your will or trust. Your charitable bequest can be financial assets (cash, stocks, and bonds) or non-probate assets (life insurance policy, retirement account, or IRA), allowing you to have a lasting impact on our mission.

Glossary of terms:

Bequests are often the most straightforward and convenient planned gifts. You can give all your estate, a percentage, or part of the residue left over after other bequests are made.

A will is a document a county court reads that states your final wishes. This is one of the most common ways to leave a bequest/gift. You can review sample bequest language you might include in your will below.

A living trust is a written legal document through which your assets are placed into a trust for your benefit during your lifetime and then transferred to designated beneficiaries at your death by your chosen representative.

Supporters can also name Blessings in a Backpack as a beneficiary to their qualifying retirement plan or IRA. Did you know that 501(c)(3) nonprofit that is the beneficiary of a qualified retirement plan won’t pay any tax, which maximizes your donation?

One may list Blessings in a Backpack as a beneficiary in their life insurance plan.

How Do You Donate to Charity?

  • Name Blessings in a Backpack as the primary beneficiary for a specific gift, such as a certain amount of money or stock.
  • Allocate a percentage of your total estate to a charity.  Many people leave 10% of their estate to a cause close to their heart when they make their wills.
  • Name Blessings in a Backpack as a beneficiary in your will. Include the charity’s name, street address, Tax ID, and how to use your gift. We strongly encourage you to give to the Area of Greatest Need.

The following language might be used to include Blessings in a Backpack in your will, living trust, retirement plan, life insurance, or other planned gift:

“I give Blessings in a Backpack (Tax ID #26-1964620), located at 4121 Shelbyville Road, Louisville, Kentucky, 40207, the following: (state the amount type of property or percentage of your estate) for the area of greatest need, as determined by its board of trustees and the leadership they have put in place.”

Please note: Blessings in a Backpack strongly advises you to seek counsel from a trusted, professional advisor when planning your estate.
