I have 18 new students to our program (due to former participants graduating, transferring to other schools or moving out of our district) and the new students are very excited and happy to be part of the program! The students that were part of the program last year and are still in the program this year, have been over the moon happy to have the program resume this school year, many of them asked me, “Nurse Walker are we doing the Blessing in a Backpack this year?”, “When are we staring the Backpack program? I really like the food!”

My school Principal, Mrs. Meyer was very happy to know that the program was resuming as we had identified children who we felt would truly benefit from the Blessings in a Backpack food. We have had parents, students and teachers rave about the program and are very happy that we are able to provide for 50 children.

As a principal in the Frederick County Public School System, I have been fortunate to work with incredible volunteers whose passion for serving the children of our county knows no limits. To that end, in three school settings, volunteers work within the frame of the Blessings In A Backpack program to drop bags of food inside backpacks on a weekly basis. Gathering funds, food and donations, approximately 20 volunteers work to prepare bags each Wednesday. More than 300 smiling and grateful children in FCPS receive bags on a weekly basis. Community involvement for the initiative is growing as indicated in fundraising support through corporate and individual donations. Additionally, our faith based community has not only donated funds, but have solicited support for food items such as soup, mac and cheese and other food items.

Our Blessings friends have been instrumental in identifying a great but yet most basic need in our community and for that we are truly blessed. It is with a deep sense of gratitude that we welcome and support our program at Orchard Grove Elementary School for the 2014-2015 school year.
