Program Spotlight: Blessings in a Backpack Culver, Indiana
The Blessings in a Backpack Culver, Indiana, program has fed kids on the weekends since 2015 when Diane Johnson started the program. When asked why they started the program, current program coordinator Brenda Osborn stated, “Our public school system currently enrolls 840 students, with 54% qualifying for free or reduced lunches. Without our help, many of these children would not have any food on the weekends.”
Feeding the Community:
The program provides food to approximately 150 students every week, totaling around 600 students per month. The program extends beyond the elementary school level, reaching out to 25 junior/senior high school students and a group of homeschooled students. Recognizing the nutritional needs of older students, they tailor their food bags accordingly, providing more calories and protein.
Summer Program and Community Engagement:
The program continues its mission during the summer months through a summer program initiated in 2016. Their program was the first in the US to start a summer program in 2016, thanks to the hard work of Laura Spensley. They deliver prepacked bags to designated drop-off locations through partnerships with the Food Bank of Northern Indiana. This summer, they plan to expand their outreach by participating in the town’s summer festival and organizing another successful fundraiser, “Pickleball with a Purpose.”
“The summer is a critical time for children to receive a bag, as many of them do not have any other sources for food. We plan to have an informational booth at our town’s summer festival for the first time. A little PR never hurts!” – Brenda Osborn, program coordinator.
Volunteer Support:
The program thrives on the support of dedicated volunteers, including faithful individuals and student volunteers from Culver Academies Community Service Club and local schools. Each month, volunteers embody the spirit of giving, ensuring that the mission continues to impact the lives of children in need. Their work has also led to eye-opening moments, challenging preconceived notions and reminding them of the diverse circumstances families face.
The Impact Competition and Future Goals:
Winning The Impact Competition in 2023 was a turning point for the program, providing them with the resources and inspiration to expand their reach and impact. As they move forward, they aim to continue serving the community with compassion, resilience, and unwavering dedication.
Thank you to the volunteers, supporters, and partners for allowing the Blessings in a Backpack Culver, Indiana, program to continue to feed kids on the weekends. Together, they are making a difference in the lives of children and families in the Culver community.
