Thousands of pounds of fresh food delivered to families in Northwest Oregon

Whether kids are learning in the classroom or online this school year, Blessings in a Backpack continues to answer the call, “Who will feed the kids this weekend?” It’s because of remarkable partners like Sysco Corporation that we can provide fresh produce, in addition to our typical weekend food bags, for thousands of children across America who might otherwise go hungry, including in Northwest Oregon.

Since September, companies such as Sysco (in conjunction with farmers across America) have distributed more than 91 million boxes of produce through the Farmers to Families Food Box Program. The program’s initial launch resulted in more than 35.5 million boxes of food delivered within the first 45 days of the program; the Northwest Oregon Chapter of Blessings in a Backpack is honored to be a part of the effort. Thousands of pounds of fresh food were delivered to families in need in fall 2020.

Charlotte Davis, a volunteer from Portland, Ore., shared, “One woman was so thankful as she has a medical condition that is keeping her from driving and providing for her girls. This food is a lifeline for them.”

Many families who received the boxes showed great gratitude for receiving such high-quality food. Some families picked food up for other families who could not come for various reasons, including COVID-19 related illness.

Blessings in a Backpack is grateful for Sysco Corporation’s support and all our COVID-19 response partners, who helped us feed kids when schools were closed. Learn more about our COVID-19 response effort by clicking here.
