Blessings in a Backpack Providing Weekend Food to La Casa de Esperanza Students
The Blessings in a Backpack Waukesha County Chapter in Wisconsin announced that it is providing weekend food to students at La Casa de Esperanza Charter School.
“We are so very thankful that we have been able to partner with Blessings in a Backpack,” said Melissa Brown, director of curriculum and instruction for La Casa de Esperanza. “Our students enjoy every Friday when they receive their ‘blessings.’ In addition, every Friday I have students from grades 3-8 who are eager to help sort the bags and pass them out to the teachers for delivery. I love how our students want to help with this every week.”
Susan Reed, managing director of the Blessings in a Backpack Waukesha County Chapter, has been working to bring more businesses and schools together to help address the problem of food insecurity during the weekend.
In January, Structura Financial Partners committed to feeding more than 30 children at Hawthorne Elementary School. The company is providing financial support and employees to distribute food every Friday during the school year.
“At Hawthorne, about 66% of our students participate in the Blessings program. The volunteers are making a difference and helping our future generation be successful,” said Tahereh DeLeon, principal of Hawthorne Elementary School.
Blessings in a Backpack places a bag of food in students’ backpacks on Fridays. The bag is packed with six nutritional items, including two proteins, two low sugar cereals, and snack items. All food is easy to open and shelf stable.
“We’re thrilled to have a partner like Structura step up and work with us to help address a significant need in the community,” said Reed.
