Childhood Hunger Is No Match for Stanford Women’s Volleyball

When the 14th-ranked Stanford Women’s Volleyball Team traveled to Nashville, Tennessee, for their season opener, they were set to win. Not only did the Lady Cardinal beat Lipscomb (3–0) and Tennessee State (3–0), they blocked childhood hunger on the weekends for the kids at Schwab Elementary.

“It was such a joy to spend the afternoon at Schwab. The staff and students welcomed us with wide arms,” said Selina Xu, Stanford Women’s Volleyball. “We were given a tour of the school, led by the 4th and 5th graders themselves! I am so grateful for the opportunity to give back to the community in Nashville and spend time with the [Schwab] students.”

The volleyball team packed special drawstring bags with kid-friendly, healthy food items, an inspirational note card, and a toothbrush. A total of 350 bags were filled and distributed to the students.

Blessings in a Backpack has partnered with Schwab since 2012 and will feed children each Friday of the 2022–23 school year. Executive Principal Cheryl Bowman, Schwab Elementary, said, “Blessings in a Backpack has been a diamond in the rough for our students and families.”

“The experience [of the Stanford Volleyball Team’s visit] was a WIN for all parties!” shared Bowman. “We appreciate the opportunity for fun, fellowship, and service learning.”
