Volunteer Month Recap

Volunteer Month Recap
From the bottom of our hearts and backpacks, thank you, Blessings in a Backpack volunteers for your passion and commitment to feeding kids in your communities who might otherwise go hungry. We couldn’t do what we do without you, and because of you, our kids grew! During April, we had a blast celebrating you through our volunteer spotlights, thank you notes from Blessings staff, trivia, bingo, and our first-ever Blooming with Blessings scavenger hunt!

Notes of Gratitude

“Thank you so much for all you do! Our Waukesha Blessings Chapter wouldn’t be able to fulfill our mission of feeding hungry kids without the commitment and generosity of volunteers like you. Thank you for all of your hard work and commitment!”

“Blessings Volunteers you all are AMAZING! Thank you for all that you do each week to ensure our children have food to go home with. You are such an important part of their life and it is so special that you volunteer your time to change theirs! I am so proud to work for such a great organization!”

“Thank you so much for being the true essence of Blessings in a Backpack and ensuring kiddos that need it the most get food in their bellies over the weekend! The staff of Blessings is so humbled by the true dedication and heart of our volunteers, as it is all of you that are the engine of the organization.”

“I would like to thank each of you for your dedication to feeding kids in your community. Blessings in a Backpack has the most amazing volunteers! We are so happy you are part of the Blessings family:)”

Volunteer Spotlights

Meet Alicia, one of our dedicated volunteers who selflessly gives her time to feed kids on the weekends. Thank you for all that you do!

“Alicia has been a volunteer since 2011. She has been the person I can always depend upon to always help with our fundraising efforts. I have lost several helpers for different personal reasons of their own, but Alicia has stuck with me through thick and thin. She deserves a big thank you.” – Judi Olson.

We want to thank Kim Venzon for her dedication and hard work.

“Kim is constantly working to enhance and improve the outreach of the Downers Grove District 58 Blessings program. She works tirelessly to find new and innovative ways to support the students in our program. She is quick to find creative solutions to barriers, even when it means filling her living room with food for distribution during a pandemic. The DG 58 Blessings program is successful because of Kim’s commitment and dedication to our students.” – Submitted by: Tanya Marquez.

“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.” – Margaret Mead.

Thank you to everyone who submitted a volunteer spotlight! We are thankful for all our volunteers who dedicate their time and energy to helping kids grow.

Sharon Kehoe, a volunteer for the First Coast Blessings in a Backpack chapter, shares her volunteer story.

“I first became aware of childhood hunger and food insecurity on the First Coast following a news story in 2012. I had recently retired and knew that I needed to fill my time and efforts with something meaningful, and this story just wouldn’t let go of my heartstrings. I contacted Blessings in a Backpack folks to find out what I needed to do to address the need in my area….and the rest is history. The St. Johns Co School Board directed me to the school with the greatest need, and my church then was willing to fund 50 students at Osceola Elementary School. Before long, our volunteer packing group grew, as did the number of children we served ….and before the school year ended, we provided weekend food to over 120 children!”

Blooming with Blessings Scavenger Hunt

As part of #NationalVolunteerMonth, three teams of Blessings volunteers competed in a virtual scavenger hunt. The team was given missions to complete. They uploaded photos to the Goosechase App and were awarded points for their contributions.
