Blessings in a Backpack and Hunger Free Weekends

mayors twoLoad ’em up and head ’em out! The Blessings in a Backpack organization is filling up sacks of food for 45 District 20 school children for the weekend.

Organizer Jan Moncallo and her team has been doing this for an unidentified elementary school every weekend of the school year for nearly six years.

Moncallo says the children at this elementary are on free- or reduced-lunch programs, so they desperately need this weekend food boost. This fill-the-sack effort was being done at the Unity Spiritual Center in the Rockies at 1945 Mesa Road in Colorado Springs.

The event has a special volunteer from the Office of the Mayor: Deputy Chief of Staff Brett Waters is also filling the sacks for the children, “We are participating with mayors across the country in this event, because it serves kids who may not have enough food to eat over the weekend.”
