Mission Ambassador Cheers for a Cause During Hunger Action Month

Story by Nadia Pierre-Auguste, mission ambassador

In recognition of September as Hunger Action Month, my Varsity cheer teammate and I organized and led a food drive in partnership with the Munster Junior Women’s Club in Munster, IN. This also included securing donations from two local pastry shops to provide cupcakes and donuts as giveaways. Our efforts were featured in our local newspaper, Northwest Indiana Times, where I was quoted and highlighted Blessings in a Backpack. Read article here.

With the support of our Varsity and JV cheer squads, Administration, and Athletics department, the food drive took place at our high school (Munster High School) all month. On the final day, we took the food drive from inside the school to the inside entrances of our football field to take donations at our homecoming game. I am excited to share that we collected almost 600 nonperishable food items to donate to our local food banks and ministries.

Ranging from ages 10 years and older, I also got my varsity cheer squad and generous event donors at the homecoming game to add words of encouragement to the Blessings in Backpack note cards. The attending local youth football teams were so excited to share their words of encouragement. I will be sending 100 encouragement cards to Anita Knazze’s attention to be attached to the food bags.
