Blanche Sims Elementary Cereal Drive Benefits Blessings in a Backpack

When the students at Blanche Sims Elementary in Lake Orion, Michigan, were challenged to bring in 400 cereal boxes to donate Blessings in a Backpack, they were told there would be a surprise at the end.

With their teachers’ help, the student council wanted to do something different to help kids in need. So, on May 1, they kicked off a two-week cereal donation campaign.

“The goal was to get 400, and if we got 400 — we got 450 — we would do a cereal box domino,” Grayson, a 5th grader, said.

“These are all the cereal boxes we collected. In the end, we’re going to tip them like dominoes,” Vera, a 5th grader, shared. “Then we’re going to send them to Blessings in a Backpack.”

On May 16, the students were rewarded with cereal box dominoes as the whole school gathered to watch boxes fall throughout the hallways. It is the first and last time the cereal drive will be held in this building; students will move into a new building at the start of the 2023–2024 school year.
