GIVING TUESDAY TOOLKIT

The Giving Tuesday theme for 2019 is “When you give to Blessings in a Backpack, you become a Superhero for kids.”

Our goal is to raise $50,000 total on Giving Tuesday, Dec. 3, 2019. This goal includes money raised on a local level by programs and by the national office.

We encourage you to set up a Facebook fundraiser and use the superhero images below to reach your fundraising goal. Click here to let us know your intention to host a Facebook fundraiser on Giving Tuesday.

We also invite you to tell the Blessings in a Backpack story that means the most to you.

Tell Your Blessings in a Backpack Story

Share about the cause that matters most to you—feeding hungry kids on the weekends. We ask you to tell the story that means the most to you about your experiences at Blessings in a Backpack. This story could be the story of a child, a family, a future changed for good, or how it changed their own lives or perspectives.

Ask someone to film you and/or another volunteer(s) talking about the work you’re doing and the reason our cause if so important. Share your story on social media and tag @blessingsinabackpack, so we can share your story too. This is a great opportunity to get teenage volunteers involved by filming and editing a video. Hand out those volunteer service hours!

Or if you already have a video about your program, post it on Giving Tuesday and tag @blessingsinabackpack so we can share.

We encourage you to write or ad lib your own story, but if you need help, we’ve provided some wording below to get you started!

Example Script #1:

When PC NAME(s) found out there were more than XX,XXX kids in their very own community who were at risk of going hungry every weekend, they were shocked. And they were determined to do something about it. So, they started a Blessings in a Backpack program.

They recruited volunteers, raised money, and began feeding XXX kids a week on the weekends.

Today, they feed more than XXX kids. Next year, they want to feed even more.

You can help. On Giving Tuesday, donate to help us feed the kids!

By donating to Blessings in a Backpack on Giving Tuesday, you’ll be giving food to kids who struggle with access to food on Saturdays and Sundays. And making lives better.

Who will feed the kids this weekend? Why not you?

Example Script #2:

Giving Tuesday is a global day of giving.

And a great opportunity to do something good right here in our community. Like feeding kids who might otherwise go hungry on the weekends.

At Blessings in a Backpack, we do just that.

Our volunteers raise money, buy food, and send kids home with backpacks full of food on Fridays.

It’s a simple concept that keeps growling stomachs at bay and helps kids do better in school — and life.

Donate to Blessings in a Backpack on Giving Tuesday — so that kids at risk of going hungry on Saturdays and Sundays have food to eat on the weekends.

Who will feed the kids this weekend? Why not you?

Suggested wording for “Why are you raising money” when setting up a Facebook Fundraiser:

This #GivingTuesday I’m supporting @blessingsinabackpack because 13 million kids in the USA eat meals at school during the week, but are at risk of going hungry on the weekends. Who will feed the kids this weekend? Why not you? Whether you donate $5 or $500, every little bit helps. Thank you for your support. I’ve included information about Blessings in a Backpack below.

Blessings in a Backpack mobilizes communities, individuals, and resources to provide food on the weekends for elementary school children across America who might otherwise go hungry.

On Twitter, include the link to your program’s individual donate page or to the ‘Donate to a Specific Program’ page of the national website. Remind people to put your program name in the program designation box.

Additional ideas:

Associate different amounts of giving with what they provide:

  • $10 help buys food for a child for a month
  • $20 help buys two children food for a month

By showing what each amount accomplishes, people not only receive a bonus motivational push, but they may end up inspired to give more.
