More than a dozen students from Hampton University’s Drumline squad last Wednesday stuffed as many as 800 backpacks — but not with school supplies.
Instead, the backpacks were filled with good, nutritional treats to eat — enough to cover four weekends worth of food for Machen Elementary School students.
The community service was in honor of “National Blessings in a Backpack Day,” held last week. The program, a national movement to tackle childhood hunger, aims to send school-aged children home with healthy snacks on Fridays, to eat over the weekend.
