Notre Dame Players Fill Backpacks With Food for Children Ahead of Gator Bowl
Bowl games aren’t just about football.
Days before the TaxSlayer Gator Bowl in Jacksonville, Florida, the University of Notre Dame football team volunteered with the Blessings in a Backpack First Coast Chapter to pack 550 backpacks full of food for local kids. In addition to bagging food, players wrote inspirational notes to go in the backpacks.
Erin Kerr, CEO of the Blessings in a Backpack and Notre Dame alumna, attended the event. She spoke to the team about the organization’s mission — to provide weekend food for children across America who might otherwise go hungry — and how Blessings ensures kids have the fuel they need to succeed in school.
The event will help hundreds of children in Northeast Florida living with food insecurity.
Both the Fighting Irish and the South Carolina Gamecocks participated in the community service project at separate locations. Giving back to children in need has been one of the biggest focal points of the TaxSlayer Gator Bowl every year.
